This definition of the State is similar to that used for "government" by Morris and Linda Tannehill in their book, The Market for Liberty (New York: Libertarian Review Foundation, 1984, p 32; originally published in 1970). Their definition of government is: "...a coercive monopoly which has assumed power over and certain responsibilties for every human being within the geographical area which it claims as its own."
