It's not a good idea to talk to an IRS agent, or any government official for that matter, on the telephone. It is way too easy to inadvertently say something incriminating. The best way to handle telephone calls is to tell the individual who called that you want to answer their questions but that you have been advised to answer only written questions and only in writing.
